A Crack in the Sidewalk

From the collection “A Few Meaningless Words” published in 1996.

How will I remember that of a tree
All by that which resembles me
Caged in cement walls
We still cry
Bounded in our loneliness by trims and wires
We still sing
Left to survive in this yard they’ve contaminated
We still search
We search for our savior
Knowingly we find it above, beneath, and inside
Deep inside ourselves
And we “the trees” break free!
